British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Thursday that the United Kingdom will deploy four additional Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Qatar as tensions
continue to escalate across the Middle East.
Speaking at a press conference, Starmer insisted that the UK has a clear and effective defence strategy despite growing criticism over Britain’s cautious response to the developing crisis involving Iran.
Questions about the country’s military posture have intensified after a drone strike targeted a key British military base in Cyprus. The attack, along with the government’s measured response, has raised concerns among some allies about the effectiveness of Britain’s military role in the region.
Adding to the pressure, U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly criticised Starmer, accusing the British government of failing to offer stronger support for American strikes against Iran.
Starmer rejected the criticism, saying the UK had already taken steps to prepare for the conflict before hostilities began.
“My focus is providing calm, level-headed leadership in the national interest,” he said. “That means deploying our military and diplomatic strength to protect our people. It also means having the resolve to stand firm by our values and principles, no matter the pressure to do otherwise.”
The prime minister confirmed that four additional Typhoon fighter jets would be sent to reinforce the existing British squadron stationed in Qatar. According to Starmer, the move is designed to strengthen the UK’s defensive capabilities both in Qatar and across the wider region.
