Spain is set to become the fastest-growing destination among Germany’s 10 largest export markets in 2025, with shipments forecast to rise 8.5% to €58.8 billion ($69.3 billion), according to a

Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI) projection seen by Reuters on Tuesday.

The increase would return Spain to 10th place among Germany’s export customers for the first time since 2009, the forecast showed.

Stronger economic growth in Spain is underpinning the rise in trade. Spain’s real GDP is expected to expand by just under 2.9% in 2025, well above Germany’s projected 0.3%, according to OECD forecasts. The divergence is boosting demand for German goods and pushing bilateral trade volumes close to €100 billion, GTAI said.

“German companies are benefiting from the good economic situation,” said Friedrich Henle, GTAI’s foreign representative in Madrid, citing private consumption as a key driver of Spain’s growth. He pointed to a tourism boom and higher immigration as supporting factors.

Spanish imports of investment goods are also rising sharply this year, said Angel Talavera, chief Europe economist at Oxford Economics, adding that Germany’s export profile is well aligned with the shift. Photo by Mathias Konrath konni, Wikimedia commons.
