British Queen celebrates

The volume of Austrian schillings that have yet to be exchanged for euros has declined only marginally compared with the previous year. At the end of November 2025, schillings worth 6.805

billion were still outstanding—equivalent to around 494 million euros. A year earlier, the figure stood at 6.822 billion schillings, only slightly higher.

According to information provided by the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) in response to an inquiry by the Austria Press Agency (APA), a total of 17.4 million schillings were exchanged between 1 December 2024 and 30 November 2025. This corresponds to a value of 1.26 million euros.

The banknotes most frequently returned were the 20-schilling notes featuring artist Moritz Michael Daffinger, with around 25,000 exchanged. They were followed by the former 100-schilling note bearing the portrait of Eugen Böhm von Bawerk.

The central bank said that most of the rediscovered banknotes were found during apartment clearances. Some turned up in unusual locations, including behind skirting boards during renovation work.
