An Air China flight from London to Beijing was forced to make an unexpected landing in Siberia after experiencing engine trouble, according to Russian aviation officials.

The Boeing 777, carrying 265 passengers and crew, diverted to Nizhnevartovsk airport in western Siberia on Tuesday. Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 confirmed the plane’s safe landing.

Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, said the crew chose to land after detecting a malfunction in one of the aircraft’s engines.

To minimize delays, Air China arranged for a replacement aircraft to be sent to Nizhnevartovsk. The backup plane is expected to continue the journey later in the day, transporting the 250 passengers and 15 crew members on to Beijing. Photo by Duan Zhu, Wikimedia commons.
