A second raccoon from a group of four that escaped from a zoo on the Isle of Wight has been recaptured. The 18-month-old female raccoons fled their enclosure at Amazon World, near
Sandown, triggering an extensive search effort.
The latest raccoon to be caught was discovered on Saturday evening by zoo staff, perched atop the parrot perches within the zoo's grounds. Her sister had already been found just before midnight on Friday.
In a post on Facebook, Amazon World expressed excitement at the capture of the second escaped raccoon. The zoo confirmed that the two recaptured raccoons, along with a third sibling that had not escaped, would be kept in an enclosure away from public view.
Despite these recoveries, the two other raccoons remain unaccounted for, and the search for them is ongoing. The zoo has stated that efforts will continue throughout the night, as the raccoons are more active during these hours. The search is scaled back during daylight, when the raccoons are expected to sleep.
Head keeper Rachel Patrick has urged local residents to be vigilant, asking them to check sheds and trees for signs of the animals. “The more eyes the better,” she told BBC Radio Solent. “They’ll be hiding in any nook and cranny to sleep during the day.”
