A zoo in Shropshire is asking the public for assistance in locating a capybara named Cinnamon, who recently escaped from her enclosure.
Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World, a family-run zoo near Telford, shared the news on its Facebook page on Monday, announcing that their "beloved capybara" Cinnamon had gone missing. The zoo reported that Cinnamon was last seen on Saturday evening and urged anyone who spots her to report it but not to approach the animal.
The zoo explained that Cinnamon escaped from her habitat on Friday, venturing into the nearby woodland within the zoo grounds. By Saturday evening, she had managed to get beyond the zoo's perimeter fence and was seen on a nearby road. Despite the efforts of teams working around the clock, there have been no further sightings since then.
"It’s likely that Cinnamon is still close to the zoo, in the surrounding fields and woodlands where there’s plenty of food and water," the zoo said in its statement.
The zoo has informed local authorities, following the conditions of its zoo license, and has provided contact numbers for anyone who may spot the animal: 01952 677 917 or 07908 726240 for sightings after 5pm.
Hoo Zoo emphasized that the public should not attempt to capture Cinnamon themselves. Although capybaras are typically friendly, the zoo cautioned that Cinnamon could become unpredictable if she feels threatened or cornered.
“Cinnamon has a strong bond with her keepers, and we believe she can be safely guided back to her habitat without any need for force,” the statement read.
The zoo thanked the public for their support and expressed hope for Cinnamon’s swift and safe return. Photo by Karoly Lorentey, Wikimedia commons.
