More than 27,000 families have found relief from financial strain, safeguarded their children, and evaded prolonged, adversarial legal disputes, all thanks to a £23.6 million

government initiative.

Administered by the Ministry of Justice and The Rt Hon Alex Chalk KC MP, the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme has been instrumental in assisting families navigate the complexities of separation. This program offers funding to facilitate agreements on childcare and financial matters outside of the courtroom.

By working with mediation experts, separating couples have managed to reach resolutions with reduced conflict and increased consideration for the voices of children. Early analysis from approximately 7,200 families utilizing the scheme indicates that more than two-thirds have successfully reached agreements without resorting to court proceedings.

Through the voucher scheme, families can access financial contributions of up to £500 towards mediation costs, surpassing the average claimed voucher value of £424.

Alex Chalk KC, the Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary, emphasized the detrimental effects of protracted courtroom battles on children and stressed the government's commitment to mitigating such trauma. He highlighted the success of the voucher scheme and encouraged more families to take advantage of this opportunity.

Anna Vollans, Chair of the Family Mediators Association, noted a significant increase in separation cases resolved through mediation since the scheme's inception in 2021. She praised the positive impact of the vouchers, which have enabled individuals to explore mediation as a viable option for conflict resolution.

One beneficiary, Jessica from Yorkshire, shared her experience of undergoing mediation with her ex-partner after a 20-year relationship. Despite their efforts to maintain an amicable separation, they found it challenging to navigate their emotions without assistance. Jessica praised the mediator for providing invaluable support, facilitating a swift resolution to their issues.

Traditionally, courtroom battles can take nearly a year to resolve, whereas families engaging in mediation typically reach agreements within two sessions, totaling three hours. Mediation sessions offer flexibility and convenience, presenting a preferable alternative to rigid court dates.

Furthermore, Anna Vollans highlighted the significant cost savings associated with mediation compared to traditional legal proceedings. She cited an example of a man who resolved his issues within five mediation sessions, costing him less than a thousand pounds after voucher subsidies, compared to potential legal fees ranging from £20,000 to £40,000.

Research underscores the detrimental impact of intense parental conflict on children's wellbeing, highlighting the importance of child-inclusive mediation. To address this, the government is streamlining the process for mediators to undergo advanced background checks, facilitating increased child-inclusive mediation.

Government efforts to reform the family court system and support separating families have been further bolstered by additional funding announced in the Spring Budget.
