The UK government has announced an extension of 18 months for Ukrainians who arrived in the country following the Russian invasion, offering them the opportunity
to apply for visa extensions.
Since the invasion, which will mark its second anniversary next week, approximately 200,200 Ukrainians and their family members have sought refuge in the UK. Initially granted a three-year stay, the first batch of visas were set to expire by March 2025. With this extension, those holding the earliest visas now have the option to remain until at least September 2026.
This move aims to provide a sense of certainty and stability to affected individuals. The extension encompasses all three visa schemes established post-invasion: the Homes for Ukraine scheme, the Ukraine Family Scheme, and the Ukraine Extension Scheme. Beneficiaries of these schemes will retain their rights to employment, benefits, healthcare, and education.
Applications for the extensions will be accessible from early 2025, permitting individuals to apply within the last three months of their existing visa validity. Migration minister Tom Pursglove emphasized the exceptional generosity demonstrated by families across the UK in welcoming Ukrainian refugees, stating the nation's commitment to providing a safe haven for those fleeing conflict.
The government's decision to extend visas underscores its confidence in Ukraine's eventual restoration of safety and stability, echoing the Ukrainian government's hope for the return of its citizens when conditions allow. Eduard Fesko, charge d'affaires at the Ukrainian embassy in the UK, hailed the move as a clear demonstration of the UK's solidarity with Ukraine, expressing gratitude for the support extended to displaced Ukrainians.
Meanwhile, amidst discussions on global security challenges at the Munich Security Conference, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urgently appealed for increased weapon provisions to avert potential catastrophe in Europe. Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron reiterated Britain's steadfast support for Ukraine, calling upon allies, notably the US, to sustain their assistance. However, delays in US aid to Ukraine persist due to Republican demands for additional measures related to border security.
Lord Cameron emphasized the collective capacity of Ukraine's allies to provide diplomatic, military, economic, and moral support, highlighting the need to leverage this capability effectively to make a meaningful difference. Photo by Dpsu.gov.ua, Wikimedia commons.
