Passengers at Stansted Airport have faced delays on trains and flights due to a power failure that impacted the entire airport premises.

The airport's railway station was initially evacuated when its fire alarms were triggered.

An airport spokesperson explained that a "power outage" affected the entire site, necessitating a system reboot.

To manage the situation, restrictions were imposed on arriving passengers to prevent terminal overcrowding.

On Sunday afternoon, rail operator Greater Anglia communicated on X - formerly known as Twitter - that a "controlled evacuation" was in progress, and trains were unable to operate to or from the airport.

The company is working on arranging replacement buses to facilitate ongoing travel for passengers.

In a subsequent update on its website, Greater Anglia informed that emergency services were present at the railway station.

"While no fire was detected at the station, a burnt switch in an electrical room was located," the update stated.

Passengers took to social media to share images of crowded terminals and queues on escalators. Some reported being stranded on trains or on the tarmac in arriving planes.
