Tesco, the leading supermarket chain, has announced price cuts on more than 500 household essentials, providing relief to shoppers amidst rising living costs. The company has confirmed
reductions in prices for key products like fruits, vegetables, rice, and tuna, as retailers face increased scrutiny over higher food prices.
According to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), food inflation slightly eased in May but remained stubbornly high at 18.4 percent. These price cuts come after supermarket executives recently refuted claims of profiteering within the industry during a parliamentary committee hearing.
Tesco stated that customers will benefit from an average price drop of 13 percent on the affected everyday items. Ashwin Prasad, Tesco's chief product officer, emphasized that the price reductions on products like grapes, peppers, rice, and tuna will make it even more affordable for customers to eat healthily this summer. The company expressed its commitment to working closely with suppliers to pass on price cuts to customers whenever possible.
Notably, the price cuts include an additional 5p reduction on 500g packs of pasta, such as fusilli, marking the second decrease in recent weeks. Tesco also lowered the price of a four-pint bottle of milk by an additional 10p to £1.45. Other supermarket chains, including Sainsbury's and Aldi, also confirmed further reductions in milk prices, which have experienced significant inflation over the past year.
