The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “Cases of Omicron are rising sharply and early evidence indicates this variant of COVID-19 may be more transmissible than previous ones.
With so much at stake, it is better that we act now to safeguard the public and help reduce pressures on NHS services, rather than being forced to take tougher action in the future.
“It is vital that the Government provides adequate support to employers and businesses who will now need to implement vaccine passports fairly and consistently, without discriminating against people with exemptions. We also need to see support put in place for those whose jobs cannot be done remotely.
“These new restrictions are being introduced at the most important time of the year for our retail, hospitality and leisure sectors. These vital sectors have suffered so badly during the pandemic so it is crucial that the Government comes forward with an urgent package of support.
“The best thing Londoners can do now is to book their COVID-19 vaccine or booster jab as soon as they're able to. Vaccines have been a game-changer and a life-saver in our fight against COVID-19 and are still our best defence against the virus.
“Londoners should also continue to be vigilant and wear face coverings on public transport, in shops and in crowded and enclosed spaces, wash hands regularly, keep a social distance where possible, ensure busy places are well ventilated and carry our regular testing.
“Londoners have done the right thing throughout this pandemic – and I know they will continue to do so in order to slow the spread of the virus as low as possible.” Photo by Photo by DAVID HOLT, Wikimedia commons.
