The Prime Minister welcomed United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to Downing Street on 16 January 2026, reaffirming the United Kingdom’s strong and enduring commitment to
the UN and the international rules-based system.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister congratulated Mr Guterres on the 80th anniversary of the first United Nations General Assembly, which was held in London. He highlighted the UN’s continued importance in addressing global challenges that have a direct impact on people’s lives in the UK and around the world, from security and stability to humanitarian and development issues.
The leaders also discussed the United Nations’ ambitious reform agenda. The Prime Minister agreed that modernisation is essential if the organisation is to respond effectively to today’s complex and fast-changing global environment. He welcomed the progress already made and confirmed that the UK would continue to support the UN’s efforts to strengthen its effectiveness and relevance.
Covering a wide range of international issues, the Prime Minister reiterated the UK’s commitment to the UN’s core principles and values, and thanked the Secretary-General for his leadership at a critical time for the international community.
