Carlsberg has announced the termination of its business in Russia after the Russian government assumed control of its operations in the country. The Danish brewer refused to accept the
terms offered by the Kremlin for the takeover of its Russian business, asserting it will not participate in legitimizing the "illegitimate takeover."
Carlsberg was in the process of selling its subsidiary, Baltika Breweries, in Russia when the state took over management in July. Carlsberg CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen stated that the Russian government had effectively "stolen our business in Russia," and the company saw no viable path for a negotiated exit. Carlsberg has ceased all license agreements with Baltika, and the future of the subsidiary remains uncertain. Photo by gripso_banana_prune, Wikimedia commons.
