Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted 62 of the 270 rockets launched by Islamic Jihad from Gaza into Israel since noon on Wednesday. The rockets
were fired in retaliation for the assassination of senior officers of the organization. Some rockets fell into the sea or on Gaza's territory. In response, the Israeli military struck 53 targets in the enclave, reportedly killing at least 20 Palestinians and injuring another 42 since the launch of Operation Shield and Arrow on Tuesday night.
However, a spokesperson for Islamic Jihad said that Egypt has initiated contact with Israelis and Palestinians to secure a ceasefire in Gaza. Egypt's news TV channel reported that Egypt is calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Palestine. An Israeli defense official confirmed the report.
