The Premier of Western Australia has expressed interest in expanding the state's relationship with China in the green energy industry, despite the federal government's
preference for other partners in the critical minerals sector. Western Australia currently accounts for half of Australia's goods trade with China, with much of it in iron ore.
However, the state is also home to most of Australia's lithium deposits and is developing its industry to process minerals into battery chemicals. The Premier's visit to China aims to strengthen the existing relationship and diversify it into new areas, including renewable energy and downstream processing of resources.
The comments come in contrast to recent statements made by Australia's resources minister, who stated the country is seeking investment from like-minded partners to reduce reliance on China in the critical minerals sector.
