Britain’s second-highest-ranking diplomat in Washington, James Roscoe, has unexpectedly left his position at the British Embassy, the UK Foreign Office confirmed early Wednesday, raising
fresh questions inside diplomatic circles about the abrupt departure.
The Foreign Office offered no explanation for Roscoe’s exit and declined to provide additional details. Roscoe, who served as deputy head of mission at the embassy in Washington, could not immediately be reached for comment.
Roscoe was appointed to the role in July 2022 and became a key figure in UK-U.S. relations during a turbulent diplomatic period. From September 2025 through February 2026, he acted as Chargé d’Affaires to the United States after former ambassador Peter Mandelson was removed from his post following scrutiny over his past connections to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
His departure comes only months after veteran diplomat Christian Turner formally assumed the role of British ambassador to the United States in February, following his appointment in December.
The sudden leadership change at the embassy arrives at a sensitive moment for transatlantic relations, with Britain and the United States coordinating closely on global security issues, including escalating tensions in the Middle East and the continuing fallout from the Iran conflict.
