The UK government has announced a major investment of over £900 million ($1.2 billion) aimed at enhancing grassroots sports infrastructure and supporting major international events,
including Euro 2028.
According to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, more than £500 million will go toward hosting high-profile sporting events. These include the 2026 European Athletics Championships and the opening stages of the men’s and women’s Tour de France in 2027.
“This significant investment in world-class events will help drive economic growth across the country, supporting our Plan for Change,” said Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy on Thursday.
The government also reaffirmed a previous pledge made in 2023 by former Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer to invest at least £400 million in upgrading or building grassroots sports facilities across the UK. Photo by Carlos Delgado, Wikimedia commons.
