British retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) announced on Monday its plan to hire 10,000 temporary workers for the upcoming Christmas season, representing a more than 40% increase compared
to the previous year.
The decision to increase the temporary workforce is attributed to the additional investment made by M&S in staff hours to enhance customer support on the shop floor. These temporary hires will commence on November 19.
Earlier in August, M&S had raised its profit outlook due to robust trading performance. Last month, the company made a comeback to Britain's FTSE 100 stock index after a four-year absence. Consequently, M&S's shares have risen by 76% year-to-date.
In a similar move, supermarket chain Sainsbury's also revealed plans to recruit 22,000 temporary employees for Christmas, marking a 22% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, Britain's largest retailer, Tesco, intends to onboard 30,000 temporary workers, maintaining the same number as last year. Photo by Mtaylor848, Wikimedia commons.
