A man has been taken into custody following a severe dog attack that left another man "seriously injured," according to Northumbria Police.

The incident was reported to the police just before 19:00 at an address on Maple Terrace in Shiney Row.

The police statement noted that the dog involved in the attack was "destroyed at the scene," assuring the public that there is no broader risk to their safety.

As a precautionary measure, another dog from the same location was also seized. Police are advising against engaging in speculative discussions online regarding the incident.

The police have not disclosed any details about the breed of the dogs involved.

The arrested individual is a 44-year-old man who is currently in police custody.

The injured man, in his 50s, sustained "serious injuries," as per the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS), which responded to the incident shortly after 19:00. The NEAS dispatched two double-crewed ambulances, a specialist paramedic, and a clinical team leader. The injured patient was subsequently transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, although the NEAS did not provide specific details about the injuries.
