British Queen celebrates

A London court has sentenced a wealthy Nigerian politician, his wife, and a medical middleman for illegally trafficking a street trader from Lagos to Britain to harvest his kidney for a transplant

for their seriously ill daughter.

Ike Ekweremadu, the former deputy president of Nigeria's Senate, was given a nine-year and eight-month sentence, while his wife, Beatrice, received a four-year and six-month sentence. Nigerian doctor Obinna Obeta was also jailed for 10 years. The trio had been convicted in March of conspiring to arrange the travel of a man to harvest his organs.

The case came to light when the man reported to the police that he had been trafficked and someone was trying to harvest his kidney. The intended recipient of the organ, Sonia Ekweremadu, was found not guilty. Photo by Reginald Bassey, Wikimedia commons.
