British Queen celebrates

Legendary broadcaster Sir David Attenborough has made history once again — this time as the oldest winner of a Daytime Emmy Award.

At 99 years old, Sir David won the Outstanding Daytime Personality (Non-Daily) category for his narration of the Netflix documentary Secret Lives of Orangutans. The film, which explores the lives of orangutans in the lush jungles of Sumatra, Indonesia, also picked up two additional awards on the night.

This win breaks the previous record held by Dick Van Dyke, who was 98 when he took home an Emmy in 2024 for his guest role in a daytime drama.

The 52nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards took place on Friday in Pasadena, California. Although Sir David wasn’t able to attend the ceremony — he’s just eight months shy of turning 100 — his presence was certainly felt throughout the evening.

Secret Lives of Orangutans also earned awards for Outstanding Music Direction and Composition and Outstanding Directing Team for a single-camera daytime non-fiction program.

Sir David’s career spans more than seven decades, during which he has become the unmistakable voice of the natural world. His groundbreaking documentaries — from Life on Earth and The Private Life of Plants to The Blue Planet — have inspired generations to care for the planet. In fact, more than 40 animal and plant species have been named in his honor.

Earlier this year, he released Ocean, a feature-length documentary he described as one of his most significant projects yet — one he hopes will inspire global action to protect biodiversity and combat climate change.

Other winners at Friday’s event included General Hospital, which claimed Outstanding Daytime Drama Series, and Drew Barrymore, who won Outstanding Daytime Talk Series Host for The Drew Barrymore Show.

Even at 99, Sir David Attenborough continues to remind the world why his voice — calm, wise, and filled with wonder — remains one of the most cherished in television history. Photo by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website – www.dfat.gov.au, Wikimedia commons.
