A section of a former Victorian church, now used as a wedding venue, has collapsed onto a busy street in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire.
Police and firefighters were called to Bradford Road just after 10:00 BST on Saturday morning following reports of falling masonry. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
Photos shared online show large chunks of stone scattered across the pavement outside The Monal, with parts of the building’s grand façade visibly damaged.
In a statement, the venue reassured people that the situation was under control:
“The most important news is that everyone is completely safe. Our team is assessing everything to make sure the space remains secure and welcoming.”
The Monal, which occupies the Grade II listed building, described it as a “minor incident” and thanked the public for their patience while safety checks take place.
Bradford Road was closed throughout Saturday afternoon while Kirklees Highways managed the scene.
The striking stone building has a rich history. Originally built between 1857 and 1859 by architects Lockwood and Mawson as the Providence Place United Reformed Church, it was later home to Aakash, once thought to be Britain’s largest Indian restaurant. It has been a listed building since 1982. Photo by Humphrey Bolton, Wikimedia commons.
