Rotherham Council has announced grants of up to £250 for families and vulnerable residents struggling with the cost of living. The initiative is part of a broader support package funded by a
£2.5 million Household Support Grant from the government.
Key Features of the Scheme
Food Vouchers: Over £1 million will provide food vouchers to more than 13,700 children eligible for free school meals during school holidays.
Energy Cost Assistance: An additional £1.1 million will go toward supporting households facing difficulties with energy bills. A similar scheme earlier this year benefitted 4,622 families.
Council Tax Support: Around 15,000 local households will receive help with council tax payments, supported by a £150,000 top-up to the council tax support scheme.
Support for Vulnerable Groups
The council plans to allocate:
£45,000 to assist care leavers.
£60,000 to voluntary and community organizations to support families during Christmas and New Year.
£50,000 for essential household items, such as cleaning supplies and hygiene products, distributed through food banks and social supermarkets.
Flexibility for Demand Variations
The council has set aside contingency funds to address changing demand. Any unspent funds will be redirected to support households in energy-related crises.
Rotherham Council is expected to approve the plan, ensuring the funds are fully utilized by March 2025, providing critical assistance to thousands of residents during challenging times.
