Millions of households across England and Wales will begin receiving letters confirming their eligibility for a £150 reduction in energy bills this winter, as the government expands financial

support for families facing high household costs.

The Warm Home Discount will benefit approximately six million households across Britain. Letters are due to start arriving on Thursday, 22 October, with notifications continuing until January 2027.

The government is urging households to check their post carefully, as some recipients may need to contact a dedicated helpline and provide additional information to ensure they receive the payment.

Expanded support for households on lower incomes

The Warm Home Discount is designed to help eligible households manage electricity costs during the colder months. Following an expansion of the programme, all electricity billpayers receiving means-tested benefits now qualify, removing previous eligibility restrictions that prevented some households from accessing assistance.

The expanded scheme delivered support to almost 2.3 million additional families last year, including approximately one million households with children.

Recipients will be informed by letter whether their £150 discount will be applied automatically or whether further action is required. Households instructed to contact the helpline must do so by 26 February 2027 and provide the requested information to secure their support.

The government has also confirmed that the scheme will continue until the 2030/31 financial year, providing longer-term certainty for eligible households.

Government highlights wider cost-of-living measures

The discount forms part of a broader package of measures intended to ease pressure on household finances. These include the removal of VAT from electricity bills in October and an earlier reduction in energy-related costs averaging £150, which the government says will continue to benefit consumers in the years ahead.

The government has also highlighted its decision to cap bus fares at £2 as part of its wider efforts to reduce everyday expenses.

Polly Billington, Minister for Energy Consumers, acknowledged that energy costs remain a significant concern for many families as winter approaches. She encouraged people who believe they qualify for the Warm Home Discount to look out for their letters and confirm whether they need to take any additional steps.

She said access to affordable energy remains essential, pointing to the government's tax changes and previous reductions in household energy costs as measures intended to provide financial relief.

Energy organisations urge consumers to seek assistance

Energy UK, which represents companies across the energy sector, described the Warm Home Discount as an important source of assistance during the colder months.

Ned Hammond, the organisation's Deputy Director of Policy for Customers, encouraged households experiencing difficulties paying their bills to contact their energy supplier to discuss the support available to them.

He also warned that consumers face the prospect of another winter marked by high and unpredictable energy prices, making it important for households to understand their options.

Stew Horne, Group Head of Sector Intelligence and External Affairs at the Energy Saving Trust, similarly stressed the importance of the programme as temperatures fall and energy consumption rises.

He urged recipients to read government correspondence carefully and respond promptly if further information is requested, noting that failure to take the required steps could prevent eligible households from receiving the assistance intended for them.

Consumers warned about potential scams

Authorities are also reminding households to remain alert to fraudulent messages claiming to offer or confirm energy assistance.

Recipients should use their usual, trusted contact methods when communicating with their energy supplier. They should avoid suspicious links and should not provide financial information in response to unsolicited emails, text messages or telephone calls claiming to relate to the Warm Home Discount.

Households receiving a letter should follow only the instructions provided through official channels and verify any uncertain requests directly with their supplier or the relevant government helpline.

With letters being distributed over the coming months, consumers are encouraged to act promptly if contacted and ensure that any required information is submitted before the February deadline.

For eligible families facing higher heating needs during winter, the £150 discount could provide some welcome relief as the government continues its efforts to address the cost of living.
