Thirty-three of Pakistan’s emerging leaders, professionals and researchers are preparing to begin fully funded postgraduate studies at universities across the United Kingdom,
strengthening one of the country’s most established education links with Britain.
The scholars have been selected for the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programmes, which bring talented professionals from around the world to the UK. This year’s Pakistani cohort will undertake Master’s and other postgraduate programmes in subjects ranging from global health and human rights to diplomacy, climate policy, media, development and entrepreneurship.
Before their departure, the scholars were hosted at a reception at the British High Commission in Islamabad, where they were congratulated on their selection and briefed on academic and professional life in Britain.
The event also highlighted the breadth of the UK’s scholarship relationship with Pakistan. Previous cohorts have brought together candidates from across the country, with women and applicants from a wide range of professional and social backgrounds strongly represented.
The new scholars will study at universities in cities including London, Bristol, Sheffield, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Their chosen programmes reflect issues likely to shape Pakistan’s economic and social development, including governance, education, health, climate action, business, civil society and technological innovation.
Among the areas of study are global health, human rights, media and development, development economics, innovation and entrepreneurship, diplomacy and biological robotics.
British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott CMG OBE described the scholarships as a practical expression of the relationship between the two countries.
“Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships are one of the clearest examples of the UK-Pakistan partnership in action,” Marriott said, stressing the importance of investing in people with the ability and ambition to deliver change.
She urged the scholars to use their time in Britain to develop new skills, establish international networks and bring fresh ideas back to Pakistan.
For the recipients, the scholarships represent more than an opportunity to study at leading British institutions. Their year in the UK will also provide exposure to international academic communities and professional networks, with the expectation that many will apply their experience to challenges facing their communities and sectors at home.
The growing alumni network is already substantial. Once the latest cohort joins, Pakistan will have almost 2,000 Chevening alumni and more than 1,500 Commonwealth alumni, working across fields including education, government, healthcare, climate policy, business and civil society.
The British High Commission is also seeking to expand the scholarship offer through partnerships with organisations in Pakistan. Previous collaborations have helped create additional opportunities in areas including heritage, climate studies, sport and business.
The latest cohort arrives as applications open for the next generation of Pakistani leaders, researchers and entrepreneurs seeking to study in Britain through the Chevening and Commonwealth programmes.
For London and Islamabad, the scholarship schemes represent a long-term investment in people-to-people links — with the graduates expected to carry British academic experience and professional networks back into Pakistan’s institutions, businesses and civil society.
