HM Revenue & Customs has announced more than £11 million in funding to strengthen support for customers who need additional help managing their tax affairs, as it opens the latest
round of its Voluntary and Community Sector Grant Funding Scheme.
Voluntary and community organisations can apply for grants from today (8 June). The funding will enable specialist services that help people navigate tax responsibilities, access HMRC’s expanding digital services, and claim the support and entitlements they are eligible for.
The total funding allocation has more than doubled, rising to £11.18 million over three years, beginning in April 2027. Applications are open on GOV.UK until 3 July.
Successful applicants will receive funding to deliver tailored, independent support for individuals who may experience barriers such as:
- difficulty understanding tax obligations
- complex personal circumstances
- limited or no access to digital services
Grant-funded organisations will work in partnership with HMRC’s Extra Support Team to ensure customers receive practical guidance and help engaging with HMRC services in a way that suits their needs.
Between April 2025 and April 2026, more than 43,000 customers were supported through this programme, with assistance from voluntary sector partners working alongside HMRC teams.
Myrtle Lloyd said the programme reflects HMRC’s commitment to making tax services more accessible:
She highlighted the importance of collaboration with voluntary and community organisations in ensuring customers who need extra support can access timely and effective help.
Daniel Tomlinson said the expanded funding reinforces the government’s commitment to supporting people who face challenges managing their tax affairs, helping them receive the assistance they need to improve their financial situation.
The grants, worth £3.73 million per year, will be awarded quarterly over the period from April 2027 to April 2030. Successful organisations will be announced later in the year. Photo by Carlos Delgado, Wikimedia commons.
