British Queen celebrates

The United Kingdom has renewed its firm support for the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), underlining the army’s central role in safeguarding Lebanon’s security and reinforcing state authority

during a period of mounting regional and domestic pressure.

The message was delivered during a High-Level Steering Committee (HLSC) meeting that brought together the British Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamish Cowell, the US Ambassador, Michel Issa, and the Canadian Ambassador, Gregory Galligan, with LAF Commander-in-Chief General Rudolf Haykal.

Discussions focused on progress and persistent challenges in securing Lebanon’s eastern and northern borders, particularly in efforts to curb smuggling and other forms of illegal cross-border activity. The ambassadors jointly reaffirmed their countries’ continued backing of the LAF as it works to strengthen control over national territory and uphold stability.

The UK has been a long-standing partner of the Lebanese army, supporting its Land Border Regiments since 2013. This assistance has included the construction of 84 operational bases along the border with Syria, six of which have been completed since January 2025. British support also extends to training and equipment, aimed at enhancing the LAF’s operational capacity and resilience.

During the meeting, Ambassador Cowell stressed London’s unwavering commitment to the Lebanese Armed Forces, describing the institution as a cornerstone of national security at a time of profound challenge, including ongoing tensions in southern Lebanon. He also welcomed progress toward establishing the state’s monopoly over arms, calling it a crucial step toward a more stable and secure Lebanon.

The HLSC meeting underscored the continued international consensus around the importance of supporting Lebanon’s military as it navigates economic strain, political uncertainty and complex security threats.

Following the meeting, Ambassador Cowell said: “It was an honour to meet General Haykal and review progress on Lebanon’s border security. The Lebanese Armed Forces have shown exceptional professionalism and resilience in safeguarding Lebanon’s sovereignty during these challenging times.

We will continue working closely with our US and Canadian partners - and with the wider international community - to further strengthen Lebanon’s security, stability, and territorial integrity”. Photo by FunkMonk, Wikimedia commons.
