The cost of housing asylum seekers in the UK is projected to rise sharply, reaching £15.3 billion between 2019 and 2029 — more than triple the original estimate.

In 2019, the Home Office launched seven Asylum Accommodation and Support Contracts (AASC) to provide housing for individuals seeking asylum. At the time, the 10-year programme was expected to cost £4.5 billion.

However, a recent National Audit Office briefing revealed that a significant increase in the number of people requiring accommodation has dramatically pushed the projected cost upwards to £15.3 billion.
