Starting April 2, 2025, travelers visiting the UK with a European passport, including Finnish citizens, will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before departure.
Applications for an ETA will open on March 5, 2025.
What is an ETA?
An ETA is a digital travel authorization required for visitors who do not need a visa for short stays and do not hold a UK immigration status. The authorization allows multiple visits to the UK for up to six months per stay within a two-year period or until the holder’s passport expires—whichever comes first.
The UK’s ETA system aligns with similar travel authorization programs used by countries like the United States and Australia to enhance border security.
How to apply for an ETA
Finnish travelers can apply for an ETA through the official UK ETA app (available on Google Play and Apple App Store) or via the GOV.UK website. To avoid scams, applicants should only use official UK government platforms.
Application process
To apply for an ETA, travelers must:
✔Pay a £10 fee (subject to change)
✔Provide passport details and contact information
✔Upload a valid digital photo (meeting UK GOV photo guidelines)
✔Answer security and eligibility questions
🚨Important: The ETA is linked to the passport used during application. If you get a new passport, you must apply for a new ETA.
Processing time
Most applicants receive an instant decision within minutes when applying through the UK ETA app. However, travelers should allow up to three working days in case further review is required. It’s advisable to apply well in advance of your trip.
