British Queen celebrates

The UK government has announced a significant set of measures aimed at targeting and dismantling Russian intelligence operations within the country, according to the Home Secretary.

As part of these actions:

-An undeclared military intelligence officer serving as the Russian defense attaché will be expelled.

-Diplomatic status will be revoked from several Russian properties in the UK, including Seacox Heath in Sussex and the Trade and Defence Section in Highgate, suspected to have been utilized for intelligence activities.

-New restrictions will be imposed on Russian diplomatic visas, including limiting the duration of stays for Russian diplomats in the UK.

The Russian Ambassador has been summoned to convey these measures and reiterate the UK's intolerance for Russia's actions.

These steps are the latest in a series of robust measures taken to safeguard the UK against perceived malign activities by Russia, both domestically and internationally. Recent incidents include charges against Bulgarian nationals for espionage activities on behalf of Russia and alleged cyber intrusions attributed to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). In Europe, Russia is accused of planning sabotage activities and espionage in various countries, as well as engaging in cyber and disinformation campaigns.

Home Secretary James Cleverly emphasized that these actions are aimed at sending a clear deterrent message to Russia and diminishing the capabilities of Russian intelligence services to threaten the UK. Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron underscored the UK's commitment to standing with Ukraine and holding Russia accountable for its actions. Defence Secretary Grant Shapps highlighted the UK's ongoing support for Ukraine and its determination to confront Russian interference.

Since the Salisbury attack in 2018, the UK and its allies have taken unprecedented steps to counter Russian intelligence activities, including the expulsion of Russian intelligence officers. The National Security Act 2023 has also enhanced measures to detect and disrupt state threats within the UK.
