Hundreds of Londoners have embraced the opportunity to enroll in "The Knowledge" for free, sparking a notable surge in aspiring black taxi drivers. Freenow, a taxi and minicab app, initiated

this endeavor, covering the expenses related to studying the detailed navigational test known as "The Knowledge."

This move, described as the largest drive to invigorate the capital's taxi trade since the 2012 Olympics, coincides with Mayor Sadiq Khan's intent to formulate a fresh vision for the iconic black cab industry, aiming to secure its future.

Freenow's offer extends to covering all expenses, including application costs, tuition fees, exams, and licensing, over a two-year period for minicab drivers already operating on their app. More than 820 drivers have applied, with approximately 550 meeting eligibility criteria, and 181 enrolling in training schools.

The traditional route to complete "The Knowledge" typically spans several years and incurs costs ranging from £4,000 to £5,000. However, Freenow's initiative aims to alleviate these barriers by shouldering the financial burdens, making the program accessible to drivers already acquainted with London's streets through their existing work.

Mariusz Zabrocki, Freenow UK's general manager, hailed this recruitment drive as a significant milestone since 2012. Highlighting the familiarity of minicab drivers with London's thoroughfares, he emphasized their advantage in completing "The Knowledge" within two years or less, making it a career-transforming opportunity.

While the number of licensed taxi drivers has experienced a recent decline, this initiative seeks to revitalize interest in the profession, encouraging those willing to undertake the rigorous training required for black cab drivers.
