In her first marathon, Sifan Hassan, the Olympic champion in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, won the women's race at the London Marathon in a dramatic finish.
Despite falling off the pace due to a hip injury around the 15-mile mark, the Dutch athlete managed to catch up with the leaders with three miles remaining and recovered after almost missing her drink at a water station.
Her track background gave her an edge in a sprint finish, and she outpaced Alemu Megertu and Peres Jepchirchir down The Mall to finish in two hours, 18 minutes, and 33 seconds. Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya won the men's race in a course-record time of 2 hours, 1 minute, and 27 seconds, missing Eliud Kipchoge's world record by only 18 seconds. Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya finished second, with Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia in third and Emile Cairess of Great Britain in sixth. Marcel Hug of Switzerland won the men's wheelchair race, and Madison de Rozario of Australia won the women's wheelchair race by beating the four-time champion Manuela Schar on the finish line.
