Anti-monarchist group Republic has received a "passive aggressive" letter from the Home Office warning them against their plans to protest at the King's coronation. The Home Office's Police
Powers Unit sent the letter, which set out new offences under the Public Order Bill, to notify protest groups of new measures which may affect them. The letter has been criticised by Republic, who said it was "intimidatory" and interpreted as "a passive/aggressive intimidation of a legitimate protest group". The group has said that its campaign around the coronation will proceed as planned, with at least 1,600 people expected to join peaceful 'Not My King' protests in Trafalgar Square and along the coronation procession route on Saturday.
The new legislation means protesters blocking key infrastructure may face 12 months behind bars, while anyone found "locking on" or gluing themselves to buildings or objects could get six months in jail and face an unlimited fine. Photo by Steve Cadman, Wikimedia commons.
