British Queen celebrates

It’s that time of year again: the National Fish and Chip Awards has unveiled its shortlist for 2026, celebrating the very best chippies across the UK. London may not always be known for its fish

and chips, but this year two of the capital’s takeaways have made the cut. The awards, which span 14 categories, recognize everything from perfectly battered fish to golden, fluffy chips and tangy tartar sauce. For now, the spotlight is on the best takeaways – the places serving classic fish and chips you’ll want to eat straight from the paper.

Representing London in 2026 are Brockley’s Rock in southeast London and Stones Fish and Chips in Acton, west London.

Brockley’s Rock has been a local favourite since 2011, when it transformed a run-down Chinese takeaway into a buzzing neighbourhood chippy. The team is known for its homemade tartar sauce and community spirit, supporting schools, food banks, local charities, and even hosting raffles.

Stones Fish and Chips, run by French-Algerian couple Amine and Najett, opened in 2015 on Horn Road in Acton. The takeaway earned a spot on Fry magazine’s 2024 list of the UK’s 50 best chippies, and its loyal customers rave about its generous portions and quality fish.

Over the next few months, each shortlisted chippy will be carefully judged by the National Fish and Chip Awards experts. They’ll assess everything from cooking technique to the overall customer experience.

From the 40 shortlisted shops, 20 will make it to the semi-finals, and then 10 finalists will be invited to the awards ceremony in London in February 2026, where the UK’s top chippy will be crowned. Photo by Steven Lilley, Wikimedia commons.
