British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been injured in a road traffic accident in Nigeria that reportedly claimed the lives of two people.
According to local reports, the incident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua collided with a stationary truck. The Times reported that the vehicle lost control after a tyre burst, swerving into the truck.
Video footage circulating from the scene shows Joshua appearing dazed as he sits in the back seat of the damaged vehicle before being assisted out by bystanders. The SUV sustained significant damage to its front and right-hand side. Joshua was later helped into another vehicle, where he was seen grimacing as he sat in the front passenger seat.
Ogun State Police confirmed Joshua’s involvement in the crash. A witness told local outlet ‘The Punch’ that the British boxer sustained minor injuries.
An eyewitness said the convoy consisted of two vehicles—a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV—with Joshua seated behind the driver in the Lexus. Four people were inside the vehicle at the time, while members of his security team were travelling in the car behind.
“Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles to assist,” the witness said. “A few minutes later, officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived.”
Lanre Ogunlowo, commissioner of Ogun State Police, confirmed that Joshua was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, told the ‘Daily Mail’ he was seeking further information. “I am away on a family holiday and awoke to the news of this incident,” Hearn said. “We are trying to contact Anthony and, in the meantime, we don’t want to speculate. From the images I’ve seen, he appears to be OK.”
