A major London park was sealed off by police after a suspected drone-related security incident near the Israeli embassy triggered alarm and prompted a counter-terrorism response.
Authorities moved swiftly to close Kensington Gardens on Friday morning after an extremist group claimed it had launched drones carrying hazardous materials toward the nearby Embassy of Israel. The group, identifying itself as Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia and reportedly linked to Iran, circulated a video online purporting to show individuals in protective suits deploying the devices.
In the footage, the group alleges the drones were loaded with “radioactive” and “cancer-causing” substances. However, officials have yet to verify the authenticity of the claims.
Officers from Metropolitan Police, including personnel in protective gear, were deployed to the scene early in the day. Police confirmed they are examining “a number of discarded items” discovered within the park, though they stressed there is currently no confirmed threat to public safety.
A police spokesperson said the increased presence was precautionary, adding that cordons have been established and the public is being urged to stay away while investigations continue. Counter Terrorism Policing London is leading efforts to determine whether the video is genuine and whether there is any connection to the items found.
Despite the alarming claims, Israeli officials were quick to reassure the public. The embassy confirmed that no attack had taken place and that all staff remain safe, maintaining close coordination with UK authorities.
The incident comes amid heightened concerns about security and rising tensions in the UK. In recent months, there has been a noticeable increase in antisemitic incidents across the country, particularly in London. Community groups and watchdog organisations have reported spikes in harassment, vandalism, and threats targeting Jewish individuals and institutions. This broader climate has heightened sensitivity around any potential threats linked to Israeli or Jewish sites, prompting rapid and visible responses from law enforcement.
While the group behind the video has also claimed responsibility for previous incidents, including alleged arson attacks in north London, police have not confirmed any direct links.
