British Queen celebrates

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, UK artists and veterans etched 80 soldier silhouettes in the sand on a beach in Broadstairs, southern Britain.

This tribute was made on Wednesday, May 22, ahead of the June 6 anniversary.

Pete Gower, a 72-year-old veteran, reflected on his father’s service with the Sussex Regiment in Normandy, remarking on the horrific experiences his father must have faced.

On June 6, 1944, 150,000 Allied soldiers landed in France, initiating the liberation of Europe from Nazi Germany. The anniversary of this pivotal World War II event is being honored with various tributes, including the sand silhouettes.

In addition to the sand art, modern-day Royal Marine Commandos from 47 Commando retraced the steps of their WWII predecessors on Gold Beach. This reenactment, conducted on May 20, 2024, served as a homage to the original D-Day landings.
