British Defence Minister John Healey stated on Monday that he anticipates the incoming Trump administration will continue to support NATO and maintain its commitment to Ukraine in its
ongoing conflict with Russia.
In an interview with Sky News, Healey was asked whether the level of support for Ukraine had shifted following Donald Trump’s recent victory in the U.S. presidential election. Healey responded, “As far as President Trump goes, he understands that nations secure themselves through strength, just as alliances like NATO do.”
He expressed confidence that the U.S. would stand by allies such as the UK and continue its support for Ukraine until it triumphs over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military aggression. “I expect the U.S. to remain alongside allies like the UK, standing with Ukraine for as long as it takes to prevail over Putin’s invasion,” Healey said.
Healey also addressed the U.S. commitment to NATO and European security under Trump’s leadership, asserting that he believes it will stay robust. However, he noted that he has long advocated for European countries to contribute more to collective defence efforts through increased military spending.
“I don’t expect the U.S. to turn away from NATO. They understand the significance of the alliance and the importance of preventing further conflict in Europe,” he concluded. Photo by Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Wikimedia commons.
