British Airways, the UK's leading legacy airline, is celebrating 25 years of operations at London City Airport. The milestone marks a significant chapter for the carrier, which has been providing
convenient travel options from London’s most central airport for a quarter of a century.
BA Cityflyer, a subsidiary of British Airways, primarily operates from London City Airport on weekdays, serving up to 26 short-haul European destinations. With a fleet of 21 Embraer 190 aircraft, BA Cityflyer has become a staple at the airport.
The airline's journey at London City began on November 5, 1999, when British Regional Airlines, a former British Airways franchise partner, launched a three-times-daily route from Sheffield to London City. Since then, over 27 million passengers have flown with British Airways and its former subsidiaries, including BA Connect, through this centrally located hub.
BA Cityflyer itself began operations from London City in 2007 and has since served more than 50 European destinations. Frankfurt and Geneva remain two of the longest-running routes, with Edinburgh holding the title as the most frequented destination, followed by Glasgow, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt.
Today, BA Cityflyer stands as the largest airline at London City Airport, offering direct flights to 26 short-haul destinations, with Mykonos as the longest route.
Tom Stoddart, CEO of BA Cityflyer, commented, “Not only is London City easily accessible from across the capital, but it’s a quick and seamless journey through the airport, from check-in to gate in 20 minutes. We’re proud to offer this experience to our customers, and reaching this quarter-century milestone is a testament to our team’s hard work in growing our operation over the years.”
To mark this anniversary, BA Cityflyer is offering up to 25% off on a selection of city break destinations. The promotion is available for bookings made by November 11, 2024, with travel dates until March 31, 2025.
Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport, added, “We are delighted to celebrate 25 years of our special relationship with British Airways and its subsidiary BA Cityflyer. This milestone is a significant part of London City Airport’s history as our largest serving carrier. As London’s most centrally located airport, offering an unrivaled customer experience, we are excited for our passengers to take advantage of this fantastic anniversary offer to fly to a range of exciting holiday destinations.” Photo by Steve Lynes from Sandshurst, United Kingdom, Wikimedia commons.
