British Queen celebrates

Mosques across the UK are set to receive enhanced protection through new emergency security measures that can be rapidly deployed in times of need.

Announcement Overview

The Home Office, in collaboration with The Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP, announced on 4 August 2024 that mosques facing potential violent disorder can now access additional security personnel swiftly. This initiative aims to bolster the efforts of local police forces in safeguarding these vital places of worship, offering communities crucial support and reassurance.

Rapid Response Process

Under the new protocol, police, local authorities, and mosques can request immediate deployment of security measures. This rapid response ensures that communities can return to worship with minimal disruption.

This initiative enhances the existing Protective Security for Mosques Scheme, which has allocated up to £29.4 million this year to fund security for mosques and Muslim faith schools.

Home Secretary's Statement

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized Britain's commitment to tolerance and the importance of addressing recent threats and attacks on mosques. She stated:

“Britain is a proud and tolerant country, and nobody should make any excuses for the shameful actions of the hooligans, thugs, and extremist groups who have been attacking police officers, looting local shops, or attacking people based on the color of their skin."

Cooper highlighted the government's rapid support through the Protective Security for Mosques Scheme and reiterated that those involved in disorder and violence would face severe legal consequences.

“As a nation, we will not tolerate criminal behavior, dangerous extremism, and racist attacks that go against everything our country stands for.”

Government Stance and Implementation

The government has made it clear that targeted attacks on Muslim communities are unacceptable and will be met with the full force of the law. The new security measures have already been deployed, providing additional protection to mosques nationwide this weekend. The scheme remains open for general applications, and all eligible institutions are encouraged to apply. Photo by AA, Wikimedia commons.
