British Queen celebrates

The Met Office has forecasted the possibility of "potentially impactful snow" hitting the UK again in the coming week, as "Arctic" conditions are anticipated. Northerly winds and an

"Arctic influence" are expected to bring snow showers on Sunday and early next week across northern regions of the country.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been issued by the Met Office for the north of Scotland on Sunday and Monday, extending to Northern Ireland on Monday from 3 am. Additionally, there's a predicted "chance of disruptive snow" in southwestern parts of the South West of the UK for the middle of next week.

The Met Office's head of situational awareness, Will Lang, mentioned, "There will be a resurgence in the really cold weather through the weekend, and that spreads across the whole of the UK during the early part of next week."

He added, "Initially, this means there will be more in the way of showers around the coasts, turning increasingly to snow for many areas, especially further north."

The BBC has also indicated the "potential" for sleet and snow on Tuesday and Wednesday in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Northern England. By Thursday, a "small chance" of snow is forecasted for the southern tip of England, including coastal areas such as Brighton and London.

Officials have warned of potential travel disruption due to snow and ice, advising drivers to travel fully prepared. RAC Breakdown spokesperson, Simon Williams, emphasized the importance of being adequately equipped for potential breakdowns or getting stuck in cold and snowy conditions.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist David Hayter highlighted the uncertainty of the situation, saying, "It’s where these airmasses meet that there’s a likelihood of some substantial snow for some places. At the moment, models are showing us a variety of options for exactly when and how this situation plays out."

Earlier this week, London and the South East experienced snowfall, and the cold temperatures are expected to persist until at least the end of next week. A yellow alert for cold weather remains in place until 12 pm on 18 January, with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office warning of potential "significant impacts" on the health and care sectors. Dr. Agostinho Sousa from UKHSA emphasized the serious impact on the health of those over 65 and those with pre-existing health conditions. Photo by Panhard, Wikimedia commons.
