British Queen celebrates

Supermarkets and other fuel retailers have been urged to participate in a government scheme that encourages the sharing of live petrol prices to prevent overcharging. The initiative comes

after a report revealed that drivers paid an extra 6p per litre for fuel at supermarkets in 2022 due to weak competition. Under the scheme, drivers will be able to compare real-time prices online to find cheaper fuel.

Energy Secretary Grant Shapps will meet with major fuel retailers, including Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, and Sainsbury's, to discuss their commitment to passing on savings to consumers. The voluntary scheme will serve as an interim measure before new legislation is introduced to enforce the publication of live pricing data. The government aims to increase transparency and competition in the fuel market and plans to consult on the scheme in the coming months. Photo by Bryan Pready, Wikimedia commons.
