British Queen celebrates

The Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, a pivotal aviation nexus for Spain, currently hosts approximately 50 million passengers and 352,000 flights annually. Yet, with ambitious plans on the

horizon to significantly bolster its capacity, a major transformation awaits the airport.

Aena, the managing authority overseeing El Prat airport in Barcelona as well, is spearheading an extensive expansion initiative aimed at ramping up passenger capacity. The envisioned outcome? To position the airport as the largest in the EU, accommodating a staggering 90 million travelers annually.

Already the largest and busiest airport in Spain, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport is a linchpin of the city's economy, contributing a significant 9.7 percent to Madrid's GDP.

While the project is slated to commence in 2031, it boasts a hefty budget of approximately 2.4 billion euros and is expected to generate around 60,000 employment opportunities. Planners are eyeing the airport as a pivotal transit hub linking America and Asia, with the new terminals one, two, and three envisioned to serve as an Asian "hub."

However, air travel isn't the sole mode of access to this vibrant city. Recent reports suggest a potential revival of the Madrid to Lisbon sleeper train service, which was discontinued in 2020.
