Two visitors, Aviel Haddad and his French cousin Ben Haddad, were among the four people killed in an attack on a synagogue in Djerba, Tunisia, during Lag BaOmer festivities at the ancient
site. At least ten others were injured in the attack.
The victims were shot in the parking lot by a naval guard who had first killed a colleague before opening fire on security personnel protecting the synagogue.
Hundreds of Jewish and Israeli worshippers, who were attending the pilgrimage, were under siege for hours inside the 2,500-year-old synagogue before being removed under heavy security and returned to their homes and hotels.
Islamist militants have previously targeted the pilgrimage, and Tunisia has experienced other attacks in the country. There has been no identified motive for the attack. Photo by upyernoz, Wikimedia commons.
