The United States Air Force (USAF) has confirmed sightings of unidentified drones over three military airbases in Britain. These incidents occurred between Wednesday and Friday, involving
"small unmanned aerial systems" (UAS) seen over RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, and RAF Feltwell in Norfolk.
RAF Lakenheath, home to the USAF's 48th Fighter Wing, also known as the Liberty Wing, and RAF Mildenhall, the site of the USAF's European refueling operations, were among the bases affected. RAF Feltwell, primarily used for logistics and housing military personnel, was also targeted.
The USAF has stated that it is currently unclear whether the drones posed any hostile intent. A spokesperson for the USAF in Europe commented:
"We can confirm that small unmanned aerial systems [UASs] were spotted in the vicinity of and over RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell. The number of UASs fluctuated, and they varied in size and configuration."
The drones were actively monitored, and according to base officials, no harm was caused to residents or critical infrastructure. However, the USAF has refrained from disclosing whether any defensive measures were deployed, citing operational security.
"To protect operational security, we do not discuss our specific force protection measures but retain the right to protect the installation," the spokesperson added. "We continue to monitor our airspace and are working with host-nation authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities, and assets."
The British Ministry of Defence (MoD), which owns the bases, emphasized the importance of maintaining security at military sites. A spokesperson said:
"We take threats seriously and maintain robust measures at defence sites. This includes counter-drone security capabilities. We won’t comment further on security procedures."
RAF Mildenhall hosts the USAF's 100th Air Refueling Wing, a key element of refueling operations in Europe. Meanwhile, RAF Lakenheath is home to advanced fighter aircraft, including the F-35A and F-15E, which play a critical role in U.S. and NATO missions. RAF Feltwell supports logistics and provides housing for military personnel.
As investigations continue, the USAF and MoD remain vigilant, ensuring the safety and security of these strategically vital installations. Photo by R.A.F. Lakenheath and Thetford Forest: aerial 2017 by Chris, Wikimedia commons.
