British Queen celebrates

With just four days remaining until the general election, Tory leader Rishi Sunak made a three-stop visit to Golders Green, including a speech at Machzike Hadas

Synagogue, visits to Hatzola’s northwest London base, and Bread bakery.

Sunak expressed his pride in being the first UK prime minister to order military action to defend Israel during an Iranian attack in April. Speaking to congregants, he recounted the events of October 7 and his previous visit to the community at Kinloss, emphasizing his unwavering support for Israel's right to peace and security. He also called for the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas terrorists.

Sunak highlighted his decisive action in deploying the RAF to support an international coalition and successfully countering Iran’s missile and drone attacks.

Addressing domestic issues, Sunak condemned the rise in antisemitism, labeling it a “sickness” he is determined to confront. He pledged to tackle anti-Israel demonstrations in London, affirming that protests should not make people feel unsafe.

He criticized Labour’s plan to impose VAT on private school fees, particularly Jewish schools, calling it unfair due to the lack of alternative state provisions.

During his visit to Bread, Sunak was warmly received by supporters, including children eager for selfies. He expressed support for former MP Mike Freer, who faced abuse and an arson attack, and praised the local community's resilience.

Sunak’s visit, organized by local Councillor Dean Cohen, underscored his steadfast support for the Jewish community and Israel. Engaging with local families, he listened to their concerns and shared a light-hearted moment discussing school and sports.

Polls suggest that the Finchley and Golders Green seat, with a significant Jewish electorate, may shift from Conservative to Labour for the first time in over a decade. A recent poll by the Institute of Jewish Policy Research indicated 46% support for Labour compared to 30% for the Conservatives, reflecting national trends. Photo by HM Treasury, Wikimedia commons.
