New provisional data released by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero reveals significant progress in the UK's journey towards achieving net zero emissions.

The UK has now reached the halfway mark to net zero, with greenhouse gas emissions reduced by 53% between 1990 and 2023. When accounting for emissions from international aviation and shipping, the reduction stands at 50%.

The latest statistics indicate a continued decline in greenhouse gas emissions across key sectors, marking a 5% reduction from 2022. Notably, emissions from the electricity supply sector witnessed a substantial decrease of 19.6%, while emissions from homes and industry also saw significant drops of 7.2% and 8.0%, respectively. This reduction reflects the UK's remarkable progress in transitioning to renewable energy sources, with nearly half of its electricity generation now derived from renewables, compared to just 7% in 2010.

Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho highlighted the UK's achievement in halving its emissions while concurrently growing the economy by 80%. She emphasized the government's pragmatic approach to achieving net zero, which focuses on supporting families without imposing additional financial burdens.

Moreover, the UK's emissions reduction efforts have outpaced those of other major economies. The reduction in territorial greenhouse gas emissions between 1990 and 2023 exceeds the combined emissions reductions from the US, Canada, France, Italy, and Japan over a similar period.

Coutinho underscored the government's commitment to reaching climate targets while fostering clean energy investment. The UK has attracted substantial low carbon investment, totaling £300 billion since 2010, with an additional £100 billion expected by 2030. This investment has supported hundreds of thousands of jobs in the UK, demonstrating confidence in the country's green transition.

Furthermore, the UK has consistently surpassed carbon budgets and maintains a legally binding emissions reduction target covering 2035, setting a precedent among major economies.

While recent years' statistics have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the long-term trend illustrates the UK's rapid progress in reducing emissions and exceeding carbon targets.
