Rishi Sunak faces renewed scrutiny regarding his connections to Frank Hester, a party donor entangled in a race-related controversy, following reports that the Conservative Party received an
additional £5 million from him, undisclosed until now.
While the Conservative Party has not refuted claims, initially surfaced by Tortoise Media, about receiving undisclosed funds from Mr. Hester, donations made after December are scheduled for disclosure in June.
Both the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats have urged the Tories to return the money.
Mr. Hester sparked widespread backlash after allegedly making derogatory remarks about veteran MP Diane Abbott, suggesting he "wanted to hate all black women" and that she "should be shot."
While the tech mogul apologized for his "rude" comments, he asserted they were unrelated to her gender or race.
Despite condemnation from Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who labeled the comments as "racist" and "wrong," he advocated for accepting Mr. Hester's apology.
In a tense session of Prime Minister's Questions, Mr. Sunak rebuffed calls to return Mr. Hester's donations.
Electoral Commission records reveal that Mr. Hester has contributed over £10 million to the Conservative Party this year, including funding a £16,000 helicopter trip for Mr. Sunak.
Tortoise Media reported on Thursday that the Conservatives had not disclosed an additional £5 million donation from Mr. Hester.
In response to queries, the Conservatives issued a brief statement, affirming that declarable donations would be published by the Electoral Commission as usual.
Labour Party Chair Anneliese Dodds condemned the acceptance of further funds from Mr. Hester, insisting that they should be reimbursed immediately. She called on Mr. Sunak to sever ties with Mr. Hester and offer an unequivocal apology to Diane Abbott. Photo by HM Treasury, Wikimedia commons.
