Lord Jacob Rothschild, renowned financier and member of the Rothschild banking family, has passed away at the age of 87, as announced by his family today.

Beginning his illustrious career in 1963 at NM Rothschild & Sons, the family bank, Lord Rothschild later co-founded what is now St James's Place, formerly known as J Rothschild Assurance Group, in 1980 alongside Sir Mark Weinberg.

Beyond his contributions to the financial sector, Lord Rothschild played a significant role in managing Windmill Hill Asset Management, overseeing the family's philanthropic endeavors.

His legacy extends beyond finance; Lord Rothschild held various influential positions, including deputy chairman of BSkyB Television and chairman of trustees at The National Gallery. Additionally, he chaired the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the British National Heritage Lottery Fund, leaving an indelible mark on the arts and cultural landscape of Britain.

A committed philanthropist, Lord Rothschild's family is estimated to have a fortune of £82 million, generously donating £66 million to Jewish causes, education, and the arts. His daughter, Hannah, will succeed him as chair of the Rothschild Foundation, ensuring his legacy of philanthropy endures.

Lord Rothschild's passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a profound impact on British society and culture. He will be remembered for his remarkable achievements and enduring contributions to the arts, finance, and philanthropy.
