French actor Gérard Depardieu has been detained by police in Paris for questioning, his legal representative informed CNN on Monday.

The 75-year-old actor voluntarily presented himself at a police station in Paris on Monday morning, as reported by CNN affiliate BFMTV. He is being interrogated regarding allegations of sexual assault raised by two women, purported to have occurred on film sets.

Previously, Depardieu faced formal investigation for accusations of rape and sexual assault, prompted by complaints filed by several women. The renowned French actor has consistently refuted these allegations.

Depardieu has gained fame for his performances in notable films such as "Green Card," "The Man in the Iron Mask," and "Life of Pi." He earned an Oscar nomination in 1991 for his leading role in "Cyrano de Bergerac."

In a controversial move in 2013, Depardieu was granted Russian citizenship by President Vladimir Putin, citing objection to French government plans to increase taxes on the wealthiest citizens as his reason for renouncing his French citizenship. Photo by Siebbi, Wikimedia commons.
